My Best Friend

Today my best buddy, my best pal, my best friend was buried. We were political animals who solved all the problems of the world and the ones facing our nation. Trouble was, we could never agree on the solutions. He was always cool, calm and collected. I was the sarcastic, hard headed, obnoxious one. We were referred to as the Great Debate Team and the two of us could have been the basis for a hilarious TV series.

Jerry was smart as a whip - unusal for anyone who served on the Nashville City Council and in the state legislature - and for someone who didn't finish high school. He had a very dry sense of humor - the kind you didn't catch until you thought about it for a couple of hours. Once he looked at me, totally straight faced, and said he didn't mean to be nosey but he wanted to know how old I was. 66 I said (at the time). Looking absolutely stunned, he said he was thinking I was about 74 or 75! Talk about deflation.

I know this isn't the place for this kind of tribute but I loved Jerry beyond belief. I will never find such a willing, funny, smart, kind sparring partner.

Pardon any mispellings. This stupid computer isn't set up for such modern conveniences and I can't spell worth a damn.

  2. I am also sorry at the loss of your friend Leslie. I hope your memories of him keep you happier than the sadness of your loss.

  4. I saw your comment at my place and figured that something sad had occurred in your life. I can't imagine what you must be feeling but if there's anything you need just ask.

Yet I do still need to correct you on one thing: this is a perfect place for a tribute to your friend, or to anyone else you care about. This is your site and you can do or say anything you choose, your readers be damned.

Post a picture of you and Jerry having a great time and write about it. Post a clip from one of his favorite movies. Or better still, keep writing passionate posts about the things you think are important in this world. I'm sure Jerry would love them.
