Tempest In a Teapot

The first deserters were volunteers. They were followed by one of the big $50,000 sponsors, the American Liberty Alliance. Not to be left behind,  American Majority ran through the exit door. A total loss of $100,000. The Tea Party Nation (TPN) needed that just to cover "that woman's" fees.

So, who is going to show up for the TPN's grand get together at Nashville's Opryland Hotel next week? Scheduled speakers Reps. Michelle Blackman (R-Minn.) and Marsha Blackburn (R-Tenn.) have backed out. Politico was told that the two asked the Democrat controlled House Ethics Committee to re-examine their participation because of the recent Supreme Court decision.

In an email to TPN members, Sherry Phillips blamed "the left leaning" Committee for Bachman's and Blackburn's decision. The wife of founder Judson Phillips claimed they "were being told two different things by the House Ethics Committee in regard to their participation." A bit further Sherry said, "we have no doubt the Democrats would have found something in (the ethics) code to cause them problems once the convention was over."

It's always them thar lib'rals.

Actually, there's good reason to believe the ladies were just looking for an excuse. Campaign finance law experts told Politico "that the decision would not have any impact on the congresswomen's' planned appearances at the convention."

As sponsors and top speakers have withdrawn and the event has struggled to sell tickets – at $350 a pop – to Palin’s keynote speech, former allies and prominent conservatives have accused Phillips of trying to use the convention to turn a buck or vault him into a leadership role in the decentralized tea party movement.

“We never did this to make us rich or famous,” she wrote. “Quite the contrary, we are patriots. . . ."

Sherry Phillips also blasted two groups that withdrew as sponsors, the American Liberty Alliance and American Majority, for caving to “influential supporters” and prideful competiveness, respectively. And she ripped both American Majority and Campaign for Liberty, a group chaired by libertarian hero Paul, a Texas Congressman, for being disorganized and unresponsive.

Not content to alienate funders, Sherry went after the volunteers who had left TPN.

“Several former members were unanimously banned from our site for reasons running the gamut from antagonism to passing on confidential information,” Phillips wrote. “These members have been blogging, as well as discussing their association with liberal media outlets and conspiring with each other to, ‘Take TPN and this convention down.’”

Seems Sherry needs to go down to the Breakers to take a break before she breaks.

  1. Of course what would anyone expect from tea bagger nation. In a way, these republicans that are ashamed or afraid to call themselves republicans because of the mess left by Bush and Cheney are really living up to their true ideals. Trying to make a buck by doing nothing.

Amazing how these clowns will rail agaisnt what they call foolish government spending yet spend $350 to go to a convention that wants to foolishly pay Palin $100,000.

And these nuts think they have the answers.

  2. Cool! Looks like a great big circular (or figure-eight?) firing squad forming up over there. I'll get my popcorn.

Even teabaggers are smart enough to figure out, eventually, when they're being scammed and exploited.

  3. I can't wait to see who actually does show up next week, should be fun!! I have my popcorn ready! idiots...

  4. Maybe I'll go down and a take a look-see.

Actually the $350 is just for the dinner when SP speaks. The convention itself has a fee of $459; the rooms start at $189/night; food and beverage is exorbitant - and it's what I call a hand-out hotel - every time you look up someone has their hand out.

  5. Guess that should be food and beverage "are" -

  6. I love it. We still have a good chance in November. Democrats have always been experts at shooting ourselves in the foot. We could spoil a wet dream. However, our base (not our wing-nut fringe) is only slightly left of mainstream. The GOP base is so far removed from mainstream that the only way they can placate the base (which is their wing-nut fringe) is to alienate the vast majority of voters.

  7. You have a right to support anyone you want but when you come to this Tennessean's blog you better have your facts straight before spouting a bunch of screwed up information.

She is against a woman's right to choose and
has voted against most food and agricultural bills. She has voted against all but one wildlife and endangered species bill. She voted against the Medical Marijuana Act. And I could go on but there's not enough space.

Obviously this woman does not represent me in any way, shape or form. She makes me ashamed to be an American and a Tennessean.

  8. Mz Sue: Thank you. It was my pleasure.

TC: Didn't mean to ignore you but had to take care of a wet dream of another kind. And, as usual, you are dead right - not as in wing-nut-right. You know their party is in trouble when they send out dumb asses to scour the blogosphere for liberal discussions, so they can drop off their bullshit. Wonder how much these turkeys get paid.

But thanks for coming, TC. I always enjoy your visits and everyone else.

  9. The REAL reason why Michele Bachmann and Marsha Blackburn backed out? They were afraid they would tea in their pants.

  10. Octo: "Tea" in their pants? Nah - they probably wear Depends anyway.

JC: As you know, my favorite name for them is Tea Bugger - but thought I'd be kind today since they seem to be bugged off.

  12. Oh I don't get enough of this... someone pass me the popcorn while I watch fat cat fraud grass-rooters and psychotic hicks who think Jesus carried a .22 get into pathetic strife. Hilarious. Thanks for the post.

  13. Octo: Perhaps they'd rather be mugged than bugged.

magpie! So good to hear from you. How's the healing coming along? "cat fraud grass-rooters and psychotic hicks. . . ." Well, I can see Opryland right out my back door, so I can give you a blow by blow description. I have a feeling there's really not going to be that much activity as so many of them seem to have blown away.

  14. " Well, I can see Opryland right out my back door"

So, does this qualify you for expertise in Nashville-American relations, and prove that you have the mettle to be elected President?

  20. The leg is healing, thanks for asking Leslie.
Just been across to New Zealand hiking and riding horses, actually, so it's at normal movement, and I can begin to train up for what I need it to do, but that will take a while.

  21. You're most welcome Tnlib. I had a troll infestation at my place Sunday and yesterday, so I understand the need. Your whole town is infested with Tea Buggers! ;-)

Magpie, come a little closer. It's lunch time. ;-)

  22. If there's a doubled comment here I apolgise, because the one I wrote seems to have gone - it was just in respect of the above invitation from TomCat:
Australian magpies are a different species and much larger than their namesakes elsewhere. I have a cat and she doesn't go near them.
Of course you could be a really big cat though.

  23. magpie: I think I may have been the culprit who deleted your comment in errors. Was trying to get rid of another one and hit yours by mistake. Sorry - I'm glad you took the risk to comment again.
