Breaking: New Oil Rig Explosion In Gulf - UPDATE

From ABC - 4:00 pm
Lee Hunt, the president of the International Association of Drilling Contractors, told ABCNews.com that this rig is different from Deepwater Horizon, which dumped millions of barrels of oil into the Gulf after exploding last spring, because it is not floating and is likely a "fixed, manned production platform."

"This platform doesn't have a drilling rig on it, it's essentially a small refinery that brings the oil up through a riser or pipe onto the deck of the platform," said Hunt. "Then the refinery equipment separates the oil from the gas and salt water. Pure oil never comes up."

A platform like the one where the explosion occurred is placed in position after a well is drilled and completed, said Hunt.

Hunt said he suspects the report of an oil sheen may be from oil already on the platform going through the refining process.

"My estimate would be that the sheen would be from some small quantities of oil being processed or even from the fuel tanks that may have been ruptured," he said. "There should not be any oil from the wellhead itself, this would be a surface spill."
Men floating in Gulf of Mexico after explosion

Earlier Today -------------------------------------------------------------

The Coast Guard has reported that an offshore oil rig has exploded and is burning in the Gulf of Mexico about 80 miles off the Louisiana coast.

One in jury has been reported but all 13 people aboard the platform have been accounted for. Some have been spotted in emergency flotation devices.

Coast Guard Cmdr. Cheri Ben-Iesau said authorities do not know whether oil was leaking from the site.

The Department of Homeland Security said the platform is owned by Mariner Energy of Houston and that it is not producing oil and gas.

I guess we'll find out whether it is or isn't in followup reports.

  1. It's all Obama's fault. This is what happens when you allow a Kenyan Commie Marxist Socialist in our sacred White House! //sarcasm//

  2. I kind of figured Lisa the Loon would have dropped by to blame it on all those evil Muslims!

  3. As of 5:00 p.m., it looked like everyone was recovered and there was no "spill." So,--whew!--back to our regularly scheduled chaos.

My banned book is Slaughterhouse Five. It's short and punchy and I haven't re-read it in years. I got it out the other day for my 18 year old grandson to read, but he passed it up because it didn't have any zombies or vampires. Really?

  4. Nice job getting the info. I couldn't seem to find out squat. Let's hope this is all there is to it.
I wonder why it blew up to start with. Gas Leak?

  5. I'm glad it wasn't any worse and that no one was killed. As of yet I don't know what caused it.

  6. Thanx for the info Leslie, I briefly heard something about this somewhere's, just cant recall off hand. But not much would suprise me of anything that happen's in the Gulf I reckon ... I look at it basically as a industrial/ petro wasteland, and it didnt get that way overnight, and sure as Hell wont get cleaned up in any decent time frame either. The shit folk's do on the Gulf Coast, they could never get away with on the East or West Coast's! And you can bet even BP will weasle their way out of everything they can too ... I learned many year's back ... TO TRUST NO ONE. Even what I wrote about this phoney Senate Panel drilling of Hayward went exactly as I wrote of suspecting it to. I wont even eat a damn thing that come's out of the Gulf! And if I want to swim ... I'll just go to the pool about 20'ft. from my door! No one really give's a rat's ass about this area, except for some enviromentally conscious type's actually. I wrote over a couple year's back, that this region need's to especially cut back in offshore production as well ... Why? ... because of the intensity of storm's that will come as the climate varies from warming, many region's of the world will be effected in various way's and eco system's globally in the next 20 year's as we never seen ... I know this for fact! Plus now on the Gulf floor you have damaged ground and crack's, that is going to be more problem's as change's come, combined with the massive exploration and production in this region ... you can only face more problem's. For those who may doubt this ... I'll say what I alway's say ... heh, heh, heh, heh, heh "Watch". For hose who think of these as trying time's now ... heh, heh, heh, heh, heh ... Ya'll hadnt seen nothing yet! :)

  7. I agree with Shaw. And if we start drilling in the Gulf we can have so many oil rigs that if one does blow up, it won't be so bad because we'll have plenty more that didn't blow up so the numbers look good.

    We have honor once again.

  8. When Alpha Piper blew in 1988, it was 120 miles northeast of Aberdeen, Scotland.
Killed 167 people and took out between 10 and nearly 13% of North Sea oil and gas production. At that time, worst ever in terms of industry impact, and greatest loss of life from an offshore oil disaster.

    No one blamed Margaret Thatcher.

But then... she was the conservative, her opposition were not, and no-one charged Occidental Petroleum even though the Cullen Inquiry found them guilty of inadequate maintenance and safety procedure.

Woe betide you if you go after the company...

  10. Nance,

Slaughterhouse Five is up there with my all-time favorites--and the movie actually was wonderful. I usually hate the movie version of a favorite book, but that one worked.

Billy Pilgrim is among the most endearing of all fictional characters--of course he's Vonnegut's alter ego.

I've been buying Vonnegut for my G-son. Just sent him "God Bless You, Mr. Rosewater." He loves Tim Robbins as well.

  12. I responded but must have hit the X instead of "Post Comment."

It is ironic and apparently they haven't found the cause of the explosion yet. I bet Mineral Energy and government folks are sweating buckets and not just because of the heat in the Gulf.

    Truth - too funny.
