Right Wing Review: 9/11 - 91/7, 2011

What a week this has been. Watching the lying marathon between the eight Republican Tea Baggers (RTP) the other night gave us, not for the first time, eight good reasons not to vote GOP. The lies were so numerous, in fact, that non-partisan fact checkers had a hard time keeping up - which is why this blogger will compile all of them in one neat little package in another post here shortly.

Right after the debate, a columnist suggested the following for a bumper sticker:

REPEAL THE 20TH CENTURY
VOTE GOP

If the debate wasn't enough to convince people that brains and hearts are missing in action, maybe the following will help.

Assault on Women

Mississippi, a state that leads the nation in so many areas - most religious, one of the highest in child poverty, some of the worst education statistics, and the leader in teen pregnancies - has put "Personhood" on its November ballot. This amendment to the state's constitution will give personal rights to fertilized human eggs, or zygotes. It should not be hard to connect the dots here.

Antiabortion demonstrators are once again taking the low road by targeting the children of abortion landlords outside their schools.

The Virginia Board of Health passed the most severe abortion clinic regulations in the nation this week. The clinics would have the same architectural design requirements as hospitals, which could close down all 22 abortion providers in the state.

Capital Hill Hi-jinks

House Republicans are - surprise, surprise - considering reneging on the budget deal they agreed to just this last month. Apparently the 98 percent that Boehner claimed the GOP is not enough. They want it ALL.

Instead of working on jobs, jobs, jobs, House Republicans - led in part by Joe-You-Lie-Wilson - want to delay the end of "Don't Ask, Don't Tell."

BREAKING: Well they did it. House Republicans just rejected Obama's week-old jobs plan. I feel nothing but cold fury.

Dirty Tricks

During the recent New York City campaign to replace Anthony Weiner's seat, NY Republicans sent out a kitchen-sink mailer "depicting a mosque superimposed over the scarred Ground Zero site on one side, and Democrat David Wesprin alongside President Barack Obama on the other."

Ministry of Hate

Controversial anti-gay preacher Bradlee Dean writes a letter to Obama - as if the President has nothing else to do besides reading a rambling three page letter from a minister of hate.

Just in case you may have missed it, Pat-Good-Christian-Family-Values-Man-Robertson thinks it's okay to ignore that part of the marriage vow that says "until death do us part" when a wife has Alzheimer's. A man has needs after all.

Right wing radio host Linda Harvey says gays and feminists "hate Jesus Christ" and that's why "you have the homosexual and pro-abortion feminists remaining silent or actually being apologists for radical Islam."

Kevin Keller, the openly gay character in the Archie comics, is getting married. Peter Spriggs, a senior fellow at the Family Research Council, a Washington D.C.-based lobbying organization promoting Christian views, objects. "It's unfortunate that a comic book series usually seen as depicting innocent, all-American life is now being used to advance the sexual revolution." Wouldn't it be grand if all these Christian lobbying organizations would put their efforts and money into helping those in need?

Not satisfied with targeting Archie, other Christian groups are attacking a real American institution - the Girl Scouts and accusing this venerable organization of religious and sexual subversion.

The State Asylum

In a state where pristine land is being raped by mountain-top mining companies, Virginia's Governor Robert F. McDonnell announced his new picks for the Virginia Coal and Energy Commission. "All are either energy company executives or lobbyists or some sort of large corporations that use coal, nuclear power or natural gas." This commission will have an impact on all kinds of mining operations, possibly influencing the end of a ten year ban on uranium mining.

Some ingenious Pennsylvania Republicans have proposed that the state's electoral votes be split by Congressional districts which would give the 2012 GOP nominee roughly 10 electoral votes even if they don't carry the state - a proposal which is causing concern not only among Democrats but some Republicans as well. If other states follow their lead, it could cost Obama the election in 2012 - which as we should know by now is all the RTP is interested in anyway.

The Cobb County Georgia Tea Party wants the county to abandon its plans for a light rail system because it would be an invitation to Al Qaeda.

Dr. Senator Tom Coburn of Oklahoma shot down the impending nomination of the dean of the University of Tulsa Law School for the vacant seat on the 10th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals, according to an Oklahoma City Attorney.

In California, a holy crusade by right wing bloggers is stalling legislation that would allow American flags to be draped over the coffins of federal employees killed while performing their duties.

Grand Finale

Utah Republican Senator Mike Lee admitted to Chris Matthews on Hardball that he wants to bring America to its knees.  And people vote for these traitors?

After citizens cried "foul," a 9/11 memorial put up by officials in Washington Township, NJ was removed. Maybe if the officials had inscribed names of the victims, instead of their own, people would have been a little more receptive.

On his blog, smirky Eric Cantor who never met a lie he didn't like, took aim at one of the provisions of Obama's jobs bill, claiming that it would tax soup kitchens.

I make no apologies for saying this guy looks and sounds as if would serve Der Fuehrer well. Creepy Matthew Vadum said Obama's jobs bill could give the "Un-American" ACORN $15 billion to help poor people vote. If you're thinking what I think you're thinking, you're probably right.

  1. wow, great job L! That last one made my heart skip a beat...

The only way Repubs know how to win elections is by cheating and deceiving the good people of the country. They even know it, that's why they are tripping over each other to get these deceitful voting proposals passed before next yr. One commenter on MSNBC said this week, why don't those GOP'ers try to attract the minority and black vote with policies attractive to them instead of voter suppression which targets those segments of our population? Cuz they are don't like blacks and minorities so why fight for them??

just more reasons to despise the GOP...

  2. They should make a law keeping cousins from marrying cousins, and then maybe, possibly, people would be able to think a little.

  3. @Sue: Think about that little series I wrote (and never finished) about America's march toward fascism. Hopefully, these weekly right wing reviews will cause people to see the whole picture and not just little snippets of it here and there. I have no doubts whatsoever that this is just the beginning and Republicans have a lot more up their sleeves. I really, really believe they want to destroy the country and introduce a fascist state.

@Towanda: LOL. There's actually plenty of that going on in the hills of KY, TN and other Southern states.

I agree with you, but it is not surprising. I cannot remember which comedian I saw ridiculing the someone for saying the bill was too long, thus unacceptable. I am ashamed to say it, but I somewhat agree. Bills should be about one thing. I intended to read the pdf of the proposal for The American Jobs Act. It is 199 pages. I have to take a week off work if I want to know what’s in it.

Now, I am going to have to wait for Sue to summarize it. Damn it!

  5. @John: There is a site which summarizes bills but don't have time to look for it at the moment. I don't really think a sweeping bill such as this one can be reduced to one thing - and with Republicans, by necessity you have to detail every little point.

Re Anon Tom: I really don't want my blog to turn into a flame war because we have more important issues to discuss. I've just decided to start posting his comments as a demonstration on how not to win friends and influence enemies. But, judging by his lack of readership, I don't think there's a lot to worry about.

  7. I'd slap that bumper sticker on in a heartbeat.

In today's NYTimes, Maureen Dowd says, "The occupational hazard of democracy is know-nothing voters. It shouldn’t be know-nothing candidates."

    Egghead and Blockheads

  8. @Nance: Sorry about the static. Anyway, that is one of the few pieces by Dowd that I've agreed with in some time. I've sort of grown a little disenchanted with her of late but this is excellent indeed. Thanks for the heads up.

  9. Assault on women: It's obvious religious-right zealots and the pols who pander to them in Mississippi, Virginia and a few other states are anxious to spawn underground abortion mills. Maybe they figure the deaths that will result from that will give those who seek an abortion their just desserts.

I'd like for them to explain how that squares with something the Bible says: "Judgment is mine, sayeth the Lord."

Capital Hill Hi-jinks: It's stuff like this that makes House Republicans the lowest form of legislative life in the country, maybe even in the world.

Ministry of Hate: Wouldn't it be swell if Peter Spriggs, the FRC and the rest of the self-styled Christian right weren't so obsessed with other people's sexual orientation and practices? Or, failing that, if they would just concentrate on those in their own ranks who stray off the righteous path. Plenty to keep them busy there, as a lengthy list of their televangelists and hustler-preachers caught out in sin makes clear. But no, they prefer to go after comic book characters.

The State Asylum: McDonnell is just following the Republican handbook and George W. Bush's perverse achievements in rendering regulatory boards and agencies toothless and worthless. McConnell is probably bucking for a V.P. nomination.

Grand Finale: At least Utah Sen. Mike Lee is up front about it.

(Psst. The link in your Cantor/soup kitchens item is the same as the link in the preceding item.)

Gosh, I thought the SOB's had killed ACORN off. If not, I hope the group get some money to turn out the vote next year, although $15 billion is an absurd number on its face. But hey, the big lie approach is a time-proven right-wing tool.

  10. Oof da! Thanks and congratulations for pulling this together!! I can barely stand to read it. Must have been sickening to write it!

  11. @SW: Good grief. Not only did I get the Cantor link wrong, I didn't even provide one about the NYC mailer. Thanks for the catch. I tend to get dizzy putting all this together.

And many, many thanks for all these wonderful comments. As far as the "public servants" - or "representatives of the people" - go, the fact that they are so callously condemning women to death is criminal. They might as well just line pregnant women up against a wall and shoot them. Every time I hear someone say they're pro-life, I want to tell them, "No. No you're not. You're pro-birth."

Just think what our country might be like if these heartless clowns would actually devote time and energy to our problems instead of just playing games and creating more problems.

I generally look for the source over a summary if I can. I found sites that summarized the S & P downgrade almost universally told have truths or outright lies. I found the same with the Judge Hudson explanations.

Every time I go the source, I walk away with a renewed perspective.

That said, if you come across that site, let me know what it is. I will visit it often. What a site!

  13. other Christian groups are attacking a real American institution - the Girl Scouts

There's a saying that anti-Semitism only begins with hating Jews -- it inevitably leads to seeing imaginary Jewish conspiracies and evil everywhere.

Today, the right wing's obsession with hating gays and other sexually-unconventional people has led it to see conspiracies of perverts everywhere. The Girl Scouts are an evil pagan sex cult. The HPV vaccine is a plot to get kids to have sex by making it less dangerous. The whole gay-equality movement and everything that supports it is a Satanic cult. Movies and TV shows that don't meet their Amish-like standards of puritanism are a vast plot to sexualize the culture.

Perversion is on the march everywhere, it seems. No one is truly pure, except Catholic priests, televangelists, and Republican politicians (especially in airport restrooms).

  14. @John: Here's another summary. (I find these by searching "america's jobs act summary")

    http://www.whitehouse.gov/the-press-office/2011/09/08/fact-sheet-american-jobs-act

@Infidel: Sad but true. It's similar to the GOP claims that there is so much voter fraud in our midst, they have to protect the voters by suppressing their votes!!! While engaging in more election fraud than anyone else.
