1960s: Dion DiMucci - Abraham, Martin and John

In 1968, after getting clean from drug use, Dion approached Laurie Records for a new contract, and they agreed on condition that he record the song "Abraham, Martin and John", written by Dick Holler (also the writer of The Royal Guardsmen’s "Snoopy Vs. The Red Baron") in response to the assassination of John F. Kennedy and those of Martin Luther King and Robert F. Kennedy during the summer of 1968. The success of this song – later recorded by many others including Marvin Gaye – which reached # 4 in the US charts and #1 in Canada, resuscitated Dion’s career.

1968 was a heartbreaking year for many of us. This song was like a salve on our wounds.

  1. How about the "American Trilogy?" Fitting it is on Birthday plus one for the Man from Graceland.

  2. I don't know why, but I never think of Elvis when I think of the 60s - maybe because I associate him more with the 50s? It's not that I didn't like his music, especially the gospal stuff, but he's in another realm for me.

    But since it's his bird

A good song but I still prefer Runaround Sue and The Wanderer.

  7. MyCue: I should have mentioned - and please know that I'm not out to hurt your feelings - but I'm really only featuring music mostly from the 60s and some from the 50s and 70s. I'm too old for the other but I do appreciate your suggestion.

  13. LP,
I loved this song back in my high school days. JFK represented a big deal for we Catholic school kids, just as I'm sure Obama does for black kids. We all need heroes. Good post, I enjoyed the song.

  14. Sue, I saw them. Thought Truth's was hilarious.
Din't care for the Cheney's "son." She didn't chose him for a father and imo it was a cheap shot. I'm not a stuff shirt - by any stretch of the imagination - but I just don't go for that kind of thing.

  15. Shaw: Oh gos, a lot of good songs from him. here will be more.

LAOT: Glad to see you're around and I'm glad you liked the selection. But did you have to say, "when I was in High School?" Oh, the pain.

I've ebjoyed all of this and hope you come back.
