Oh, Freedom is a post Civil War African American freedom song. I think it's an appropriate choice given the recent events in Arizona and the rhetoric of some politicians these days. I also think Baez's voice was made for this song.
One comment on the YouTube video pretty much sums it up.

ReplyDeleteShaw: She came to the University of Houston several times. We had a theatre in the round. Those of us who couldn't afford the regular fee could pay $3.00 to sit behind her and facing the audience. But she made sure to turn around and face us on numerous occasions - enough that we felt we got more than out money's worth.
If you haven't read her book, "Daybreak", it's worth looking for.
I saw her in the fall of 2008. The voice was deeper and weathered, but somehow more accessible for that. No "We Shall Overcome," but a wonderful rendition of "Joe Hill." I was 53 and one of the youngest people in attendance!
