  1. I read about this today. The nutcases are coming out of the cockroach infested walls like there's a flood or something. Sad. Very, very sad. I feel really bad for Mr. Sharif. The physical wounds will heal, but I worry about his emotional wounds.

  2. boomer: I really can't say why but there's something about this story that bothers me. Did you link to the original and its updates?

  3. Didn't make sense, Leslie. Kid seems like a textbook do-gooder. Maybe going to Afghanistan and meeting with soldiers caused a 180 degree turn? Odd story.

  4. I saw this this morning and got a weird red flag in my head. I'm going to wait a few days before I make any comments about this one. Just to get all the news about it and not end up being taken for an idiot because I got too emotional about it.

  5. I had what I thought was a pretty decent piece up and then Paula @ Birdsonawire sent me a heads up, so I updated it. But the more I thought about it, the more my own red flags started waving, albeit a little limply, but decided to do a little wait and see. Time will tell.

  6. tnlib, I understand your discomfort with respect to the anomaly of a former aid worker suddenly turning into a vicious attacker. Of course, alcohol played a role, but the constant bombardment of messages in our media combined with impaired judgement due to alcohol do not dismiss those who incite hatred.

With respect to Enright, there is the possibility of an underlying psychiatric disorder, for which alcohol serves as a form of self-medication. Still, in legal and psychiatric terms, such an explanation would not negate responsibility for his actions. Regrettable and tragic, any way you look at it.

  7. Good for you, tnlib. Holding off for additional information makes good sense when a story seems incomplete or doesn't add up. I've done it a few times and don't recall later regrets.

  9. I think it's safe to call it legit at this point. This fellow may have been self-medicating with drugs as well as alcohol. And that's one of the things I was looking for or the possibility that the cabbie had been the aggressor, although unlikely.

Octy - I called out Murdoch and the Koch family for supporting Beck & Co. and their hate speeches. I wish I had saved the original.

Thanks for the support, SW. I'm like you. If I have second thoughts about a post, I have no qualms about yanking it. It wouldn't do much for my credibility to spread falsehoods, even if I didn't create them.

boomer: Thanks - I'm trying to keep it updated, at least for the next few hours. It's the NY Times cityroom blog where I got the first bits of info about this.

  10. It seems we're in reverse here, heading back to the days before he civil rights movement of the 60s with bigots slaming heads and nutbags screaming over mosques. It won't be long 'til we start seeing crosses burning on Muslim lawns and Muslims hanging from telephone poles.

Hell, even the war-mongers have gone mad again, one wasn't enough so Bush drug us into two Vietnams.

  11. wow I'm afraid Boomer is right. I can see violence towards Muslim Americans just as we have towards African Americans, gays, Mexicans, Asians(in Philly Asians are frequently a target for violence) etc. etc. The intolerant wingnuts are coming out in full force, it looks scary to me. Horrific story Leslie from what I've read.

  12. Wonder if the hatemongers will say sorry for inciting all this violence or will they once again say, well we didn't know anyone would do anything. I just want the world to stop so I can get off of it right now. I am tired of man's inhumanity to man. SICK OF IT

  13. Actually I have been reading up on this in many of the major media's, and how many are confused, etc. So far the evidence connecting this assailant to the offense is pretty solid, of course one is innocent until proven guilty in our democracy. But ... in my opinion only here ... I am sure as I been reading also from folk's that it may sound fishy ... and also have read much about folk's talking about the defendant's love, charitable past, etc. And there is probably 1001 reason's as to why one may do this of course, and perhap's alcohol played a factor, perhap's psych trauma from his visit's abroad, perhap's the tension's currently in NYC Tri-State Area, maybe he heard voice's, or was influenced by hate literature or Rolling Stone magazine, Dr.Phil, or Ronald McDonald. He has a pretty face and innocent soft look, and pleasantly plump and cute as well, which is nice. However ... I look at what is presented here in the crime scenario ... and the fact that this fella (assailant) .. took a weapon, knowingly and intentionally, whether it was out of hate, love, or confusion, a deadly weapon if used correctly, which obviously he shown little experience in usage of weaponry .. and intended on cutting major arteries out of the man's neck, to... well ... kill the victim. Personally I am not a religious man or have unconditional love for folk's who would attempt to kill me, or am forgiving for such. Or care about his psychological trauma or anything else, just his action's .. and as a juror, with this evidence, it would take me less than 5 minute's to find him guilty, and serve him also the maximum sentence I was allowed. The cabbie also would have been legally in his right to kill his assailant, and walk scott free for doing so. Cabbies should carry a gun .. and if and when they get the opportunity to defend themselves against these types... do so, with extreme vengeance .. it will save alot of tax dollar's in court proceeding's as well. Thank You Leslie.

  14. I'm still holding off on this until I get a better handle on his motivations, but I bet a dollar against a donut that it boils down to Republican hate mongering.

  15. Lisa: I just filed you away under Hate and Stupid. Nobody here said anything about respecting this guy because he a lefty or for any other reasons.

  16. Everybody. I just deleted the Lisa the Loon. Anyway, I'm sorry I haven't been back to read the otherwise intelligent and enlightening comments - proving once again that only people on the left can rad, write and understand English.

Well, as we know now, Enright does seem to have some mental health issues. Funny, I thought that was reserved for members of the right. Anyway, someone with any assortment of psychiatric problems can easily fall pray to the kind of hate rhetoric we're seeing from the dum-shits on the right. Unconscionable on their part, don't you think?
